Introduction

In the minor Science & Research Based Business you develop insights and skills in the area of management, business development and entrepreneurship. Focus is on innovation and entrepreneurship on the interface of science and business. The curriculum is furthermore orientated towards the application of theories and concepts in practical assignments.

Upon finishing this minor, you will have developed – basic knowledge of business administration with focus on issues in the development of research-driven projects; – insights into the relationships between science, research and business; – views on career perspectives on the interface of science and business; – skills in applying concepts and theories that are of importance in developing strategic, marketing, project management and financial aspects of research-driven entrepreneurship; – experience with recognizing, assessing, and developing actual business opportunities and writing a business plan.

The program is in particular suitable for science students considering a career in business. Not only science-driven companies, also consultancies, banks and the government recruit people who combine a science background with commercial insight. It is suitable as well for students from other disciplines who want to learn about management and entrepreneurship in science-driven business. It may also help those who doubt about the choice between pursuing a science or business career and the master degree they want to pursue after receiving their BSc.

The S&RBB minor is open to all 3rd year Bachelor students from the universities of Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam who are in Science or have an affinity with Science & Technology
Students with no science background will not only learn about business, they will also get insights into the process of turning science into business and the major issues in this process .

Courses

The programme for the 30 EC Minor Science & Research Based Business consists of two full-time courses:

  • [Management Fundamentals Bachelor Edition]

  • [New Technology Ventures]

The ‘Management Fundamentals’ course is made to help broaden your horizon and to find out whether you would enjoy working in business and industry. You become acquainted with some of the major organizational and commercial principles, you improve your personal skills, and you also get an idea of the opportunities in the business sector.

The course ‘Technology Ventures’ focuses on the process between acquiring new knowledge and actually applying this knowledge in innovation and business, by planning new activities and starting up new companies based on knowledge generated in the exact and natural sciences. This is also known as new business development, and seen as the key condition for an innovative society. Pivotal in this process are people who understand science as well as the business sector and are able to bring the two together.

Course periods

The entire S&RBB Minor is a full-time programme spread out over six months from September 5, 2016 till January 27, 2017:

  • Management Fundamentals, Bachelor Edition, starts on Monday September 5, 2016. The course lasts for 10 weeks and finishes on November 12, 2016.

  • New Technology Ventures, which starts on Monday November 15, 2016. The course lasts for 10 weeks and finishes on January 27, 2017.
